Zurich (ZRH)

Like many European airports, Zurich’s is well connected to the city center by train. There’s no special reason to choose an airport hotel here unless you have an especially early departure or late arrival. In Zurich, however, you don’t necessarily have to choose between staying at an airport hotel or not. The Airport Hotel Guru knows an excellent hotel that perfectly positioned for both city center and airport access. Read on . . .

Overall Best Zurich Airport Hotel:

Hilton Zurich Airport / Apart Hotel

zhrhilton Zurich (ZRH)Since virtually all of Zurich’s airport hotels are expensive you may as well choose the nicest and most luxurious option– the Hilton Zurich Airport. Free shuttles make the short drive between the Hilton and the airport every 10 or 15 minutes, a more frequent schedule than any other ZRH hotel. The rooms here are larger than any other ZRH airport hotel and come with all the amenities you’d expect including in-room wireless internet. Best of all is the Hilton’s alpine setting. The property is perched on a hill at the edge of a forest through which the there’s a walking/jogging trail for guest use and a field of flowers that will have you spinning around as if from a scene in Sound of Music. (Yes, the Airport Hotel Guru knows Sound of Music took place in neighboring Austria, but work with us here). There may be no other large hotel that is so close to a major airport (about an 8 minute drive) but feels so far away.

HOWEVER . . . the Hilton’s isolated setting does make it difficult for guests to go to the Zurich city center or to restaurants other than those at the hotel. Also, the Hilton has no swimming pool. If either drawback is a deal breaker for you The Airport Hotel Guru strongly suggests the Swissôtel (see below) instead.

Money saving tip: The Hilton Zurich Aiport is essentially two properties — the main Hilton and the Apart Hotel. Both use the same convenient airport shuttle and both have the same rustic setting. Rooms at the Apart Hotel are a little less nice but can cost significantly less. Compare the current rates of both before making your decision.

Best Zurich Airport Hotel (that also works for city center accommodations)

Swissôtel Zurich

zrhswiss 300x190 Zurich (ZRH)For a combination airport-and-downtown hotel, there is no better location in Zurich than the Swissôtel’s. The property is across from a train station from where there is frequent service to the the city center (two stops away) and the airport (one stop). You can also make the airport journey on the hotel’s shuttle bus but that costs CHF 8, runs on an inconsistent schedule, and takes a frustratingly long time once you factor in the stop for guests at the Courtyard Marriott; unless you have a lot of luggage you are better off taking the train to/from the Zurich Oerlikon station. As for the hotel itself, it doesn’t exactly exude character but it is modern, efficient and amenity-filled. The Airport Hotel Guru is a huge fan of the infinity pool on the hotel’s top floor and the large buffet breakfast.

Quality of stay tip: It is well worth upgrading to a superior room, which not only have better bathrooms and upper-floor views of the Alps (and free binoculars for taking in the vista) but also free in-room internet. In the standard rooms, wi-fi costs a whopping CHF 30 for 24 hours. Also always, good rates are available through the Airport Hotel Guru.

Honorable Mention Best Zurich Airport Hotel:

Airport Dayrooms

Within the transit area of the Zurich airport itself are a handful of hotel rooms. They are no bastion of luxury. The windowless cell-like rooms contain a sink, a fluorescent lamp, a bed that is something akin to a glorified cot . . . and nothing else. The Dayrooms are inside passport control and airport security, which means you won’t be able to stay here if you are arriving into ZRH late (because you won’t be able to pick up your checked luggage) or if you are departing early (because you likely won’t be able to check in to your flight to obtain the boarding pass needed to get past security). However, if you have a long layover and want a place to crash for a few hours the Dayrooms are a very practical and reasonably priced option. Click here for rates and booking info.

Closest Accommodations to the Zurich Airport:

The Dayrooms (see above) are located inside the airport. Among the airport hotels the closest is the Hotel Fly Away. Technically you can walk here, and The Airport Hotel Guru has, but the way involves negotiating a construction site and several non-pedestrian friendly roads.

Cheapest Zurich Airport Hotel:

The Dayrooms (see above) are easily the cheapest airport accommodations option. No hotel in the Zurich airport area could be remotely described as “cheap.” If you are on a tight budget best to stay in a hostel near a rail station and take the train to the airport.

The Most Luxurious Zurich Airport Hotel:

The Hilton (see above) is the most luxurious of the Zurich airport hotels. If you are looking for the most comfortable digs around you’ll need to stay in the city center. There, the elegant Alden Hotel Splugenschloss is an Airport Hotel Guru favorite.

Best Value Zurich Airport Hotel:

Novotel Zurich Airport Messe

zrhnov Zurich (ZRH)After a renovation in 2007 the Novotel Zurich Airport didn’t raise their prices but did immensely raise their quality. The rooms are now modern and clean and feature comfortable beds. There’s a certain chic edge to this property now, not to the point where it would be featured along with other high design hotels but enough to make guests feel like they are staying in someplace a little special. We also appreciate the complimentary in-room wireless internet. The Novotel’s location is not very convenient for exploring Zurich but the free shuttle every 30 minutes does make for a relatively easy commute from the airport. The prices for a night’s stay here seems to fluctuate often. Check the rates for the dates of your stay and you might find an excellent value (relative to your other Zurich options).

ZRH Airport Info:

Zurich Airport

There is wifi throughout most of the airport but it is very expensive. Several providers offer a confusing array of plans. Shop around for the best (or, rather, the least worst) deal.
