Stockholm (ARN)

Stockholm’s Arlanda airport is blessed with two hotels connected to the terminals: one luxury and one budget. Coming this December there will be a third at-the-airport hotel that, if not better than the two existing options, promises to at least be more interesting.

Overall Best Stockholm Airport Hotel:

Radisson SAS SkyCity Hotel

 Stockholm (ARN)
sto rsky exter 1 Stockholm (ARN)The modern Radisson SAS Sky City is directly across the street from the Stockholm airport, between terminals 4 and 5. This sleek property has nearly everything you’d expect from a world-class business hotel: gym, sauna, well-appointed rooms with flatscreen TVs and extremely comfortable beds. There’s no pool, which we feel a hotel of this caliber and price should have. The Radisson SAS makes up for this, by our score keeping anyway, with free in-room internet and a high level of service. Hotels in Sweden (if we may be allowed to stereotype a little) tend to be a bit rigid in their rules and hospitality. The welcoming staff at the Radisson SAS seem especially flexible and willing to accommodate special needs. Add to that an excellent buffet breakfast and super-convenient location and the Radisson SAS SkyCity gets our pick for Stockholm’s best airport hotel.

Rest And Fly

If IKEA were to design a no-frills hostel it would look like the Rest And Fly.

Located inside SkyCity (the same complex that houses the Radisson), literally across the street from the airport, the Rest And Fly is super convenient. The check-in process is available 24-hours and is very efficient. And the price makes the Rest And Fly the single cheapest among the accommodation options that meet our qualifications for an airport hotel: an overnight single is 595 SEK (about US$90, €65), a day room is 100 SEK for the first hour and 50 SEK (about US$7.50, €5) after that. Somehow everything about the Rest And Fly works!

So what’s the catch? The rooms are basic. They are very clean, remarkably quiet and adequately functional, with a wooden desk and two bunk beds, but basic. The rooms have no windows, to say nothing of a TV, coffee maker or in-room internet. Rooms don’t have an en-suite bathroom either — all toilet and shower facilities are shared. There’s no system for getting wake-up calls (the rooms have no telephone). You even have to make your own bed, though sheets and blankets are provided along with a towel.

The Airport Hotel Guru is big on efficient and convenient and so we are big fans of the Rest And Fly. If you are looking for a more traditional hotel room but don’t want to splurge for the Radisson check out the options below.

Best Hotel If Both Of The Above Two Options Are Full:

These are two reasonable hotel options that aren’t connected to ARN airport but do offer free shuttles:

Instead of the Radisson: Quality Hotel Airport Arlanda
 Stockholm (ARN)
A recent renovation greatly upgraded the quality of the rooms at this business hotel with a hip edge. The renovation didn’t increase the size of the rooms (which are small) but did put in hardwood floors and beds that rival the comfort of the ones at the Radisson. The rate includes free wireless internet and a rather good free breakfast. Car parking is free too.

Instead of the Rest And Fly: Connect Hotel Arlanda Stockholm (ARN)

The Connect is a good value. A room here only costs around 250 SEK (US$38, €25) more than the Rest And Fly (above). Unlike the Rest And Fly you have to take a shuttle to get to the Connect Hotel but also unlike the Rest And Fly you’ll the Connect will give you a proper room with a flatscreen TV and attached shower. A small breakfast is included in the price and other food options are around a 10 minute walk away.

ARN Airport Info:

Stockholm-Arlanda Airport

Arlanda is an efficient four terminal airport. The best way to/from the center center is via the express train. There are also several buses to destinations around southern Sweden.

The Rest And Fly (reviewed above) has showers non-guests may use for 75 SEK (around US$11, €8).

You should definetly try the Jumbo hostel where you can spend a night in a jumbo jet.
