LaGuardia Airport is relatively convenient to Manhattan. If you live in New York City it is unlikely that you’ll need a hotel to catch an early morning flight. However, the airport is notorious for flight delays. In 2008, an astonishing 43% were more than 30 minutes late taking off from, or landing at, LaGuardia! And if past trends are any indication 2009 will be an even worse year for LGA flight delays. If your itinerary calls for you to land at LaGuardia at at the evening, plan for the worse, get a hotel by the airport, and head into the city in the morning.
Best Overall LGA Airport Hotel
Marriott LaGuardia Airport
The Airport Hotel Guru loves when the best value hotel for a particular airport is also it’s most luxurious option and offers the accommodations closest to the airport. That’s the case with LaGuardia Airport and the Airport Marriott.
A recent renovation at the hotel made this property perhaps the nicest Marriott in the whole New York City region. The rooms are plush and feature comfy beds, sleek bathrooms, iPod plug-in consoles and 32-inch flatscreen TVs. There’s also a more-that-decent gym and a pool that, while on the small size, is large enough for swimming laps. The Marriott is located directly across from the airport—there’s a frequent and complimentary shuttle. Despite this close airport proximity the Marriott’s double-paned windows ensure that the rooms remain whisper-quiet. Our only complaint: The in-room internet costs an additional $12.95.

Best New York Travel Guidebooks

Best New York Guidebook for the Kindle: Frommer’s New York City guide is one of the best guidebooks available on the Kindle to anywhere, not just New York. We also like The Cheap Bastard’s Guide to New York City.
The Kindle is an electronic e-book reading device with a screen that mimics the look of the printed page. The device is as thin as a magazine, lighter than a paperback, holds up to 1,500 books (!). Highly suggested for frequent travelers. |

Best New York City Paper Guidebooks: For a general guide the best choice is the Frommer’s New York City 2009. However, there are many specialty guidebooks that might work better for your particular trip. For restaurant reviews buy the Zagat Guide. Off the Beaten (Subway) Track is a guide to New York’s more unusual attractions. The Wallpaper City Guide will lead you to New York’s hottest hotels and attractions. Also, the Streetwise laminated map is an invaluable tool for finding your way around. |
