It can take at least an hour (and often more, depending on traffic) to travel between Manhattan and JFK airport. If you have an early morning or late night flight getting a hotel out by the airport is suggested.
Best Overall JFK Airport Hotel
Fairfield Inn by Marriott JFK Airport
Airports around JFK are notoriously overpriced. Among them, The Fairfield Inn is the best value. Rooms are clean, quiet and comfortable. (They aren’t luxurious like your typical Westin or Hilton, but they are very livable and nicer than your typical Fairfield Inn). The rate includes use of in-room wireless internet. The Fairfield Inn is also one of the closest airports to JFK—their complimentary shuttle will pick you up about 10 minutes after you call asking them too. Unlike every other JFK-area hotel we know of, the Fairfield also provides complimentary transportation to the subway station and to Green Acre Mall.
Note: The hotel has a Fly And Drive rate that includes 12 nights of free parking.
Most Luxurious JFK Airport Hotel
Sheraton JFK Airport Hotel
For a truly luxurious hotel you’ll have to stay in Manhattan. Out by JFK, the Sheraton is your best choice for nice digs. Relative to Manhattan hotels, it isn’t that expensive either. The Sheraton JFK Airport has a gym and a heated indoor pool, rooms come with a Sweet Sleeper bed, 32″ LCD HDTV and complimentary high speed internet access. From the hotel to the airport the free airport shuttle leaves every 30 minutes, 24 hours a day. From the airport the shuttle picks guests up at Federal Circle (to get there take the AirTrain from whatever terminal you arrive at).

Best New York Travel Guidebooks

Best New York Guidebook for the Kindle: Frommer’s New York City guide is one of the best guidebooks available on the Kindle to anywhere, not just New York. We also like The Cheap Bastard’s Guide to New York City.
The Kindle is an electronic e-book reading device with a screen that mimics the look of the printed page. The device is as thin as a magazine, lighter than a paperback, holds up to 1,500 books (!). Highly suggested for frequent travelers. |
|
Best New York City Paper Guidebooks: For a general guide the best choice is the Frommer’s New York City 2009. However, there are many specialty guidebooks that might work better for your particular trip. For restaurant reviews buy the Zagat Guide. Off the Beaten (Subway) Track is a guide to New York’s more unusual attractions. The Wallpaper City Guide will lead you to New York’s hottest hotels and attractions. Also, the Streetwise laminated map is an invaluable tool for finding your way around. |

Don’t Head To New York City Without . . .
. . . a small, ultra-portable travel netbook
Nearly everywhere in Manhattan has wireless internet. High quality powerful, portable, laptops can be bought for as littler as $350. See this review of Acer and Asus netbooks for more information.

I am an international student living in London about to take a student field trip to New York City. There was some very useful information here on airport hotels, however, do you recommend for tourists to stay at an airport hotel? They are close to the airport but are they far from the tourist attractions? Thanks.
NYFT:
NO! For a NYC visit you don’t want to be staying by the airport. For good yet cheap accommodations check out HostelBookers. (Despite the name it offers more than hostels). I suggest either Urban Oasis or the L-Hostel. Good luck!
