The Best Newark EWR Airport Hotels

As the crow (or airplane) flies EWR airport—outside of Newark, New Jersey—is closer to Manhattan than New York City’s JFK airport is and almost as close as LaGuardia. However, being separated from Manhattan by either a traffic-filled tunnel or bridge crossing, the commute between the city and Newark airport can be a frustrating affair. Staying at a EWR airport hotel makes particular sense if you have an early morning flight.

Best Overall Newark Airport Hotel

Residence Inn Newark Elizabeth/Liberty International Airport The Best Newark EWR Airport Hotels
It may have a convoluted name but The Residence Inn by Marriott Elizabeth Newark Liberty Airport Hotel offers the best value EWR accommodations, particularly on weekend nights when prices plummet. This all-suite property features an indoor pool (small), gym (surprisingly expansive) and high speed internet (free). Breakfast is included in the room rate as is a grocery shopping service—the hotel staff will go out and get food for you to prepare in your kitchen. The complimentary shuttle will bring you to the airport whenever you request it (call them at 908-352-4300 after you pick up your luggage from baggage claim).

Honorable Mention Best EWR Airport Hotel

Marriott Newark Airport The Best Newark EWR Airport Hotels
For many years the Marriott Newark Airport was our favorite EWR hotel. Recently, we’ve felt that the property is getting old and is in need of some renovations. And the complimentary airport shuttle, which theoretically comes every 15 minutes, have been running further and further behind schedule. (The shuttle departs the airport from bus stop #5). We also cringe at the hotel’s $12.95 internet fee. Still, the Marriott has the most convenient location, nearly within walking distance of the airport, across from the main terminal. The staff is friendly and the rooms are well appointed.

Best Budget Newark Airport Hotel

Days Hotel Newark Airport The Best Newark EWR Airport Hotels
The Days Hotel (not to be confused with a property that’s part of the Days Inn chain) is a vary solid budget option—rates average around $75/night. For that you’ll get free high speed internet and a reasonably nice room . . . with a not-so-nice view of the airport parking lot. What really sets the Days Hotel apart from other EWR options in this price category is its surprisingly good restaurant. The complimentary airport shuttle runs 24 hours a day; there’s also a public bus (#62) to the Newark Penn train station.

The Kindle is an electronic e-book reading device with a screen that mimics the look of the printed page. The device is as thin as a magazine, lighter than a paperback, holds at least 1,500 books (!). Highly suggested for frequent travelers.

Frommer's New York City Guidebook Best New York City Paper Guidebooks: For a general guide the best choice is the Frommer’s New York City 2009. However, there are many specialty guidebooks that might work better for your particular trip. For restaurant reviews buy the Zagat Guide.
