Anchorage (ANC)

There’s a muddle of hotels around the Anchorage airport, none dreadful, none terrific, all relatively close to each other. The only really different option is the Right Touch Massage & Rest Center (see “Closest To Airport”). We had to get picky to make our best choices.

Overall Best Anchorage Airport Hotel:

Courtyard Anchorage Airport
anccy.thumbnail Anchorage (ANC)
Marriott’s Courtyard wins our best selection for having the most luxurious rooms, the best pool and, importantly, the most consistently high quality of service. It also has frequent airport shuttles and free wi-fi. That said, the Courtyard is only marginally better than our value choices (see below) while costing significantly more (around $100-150 versus $60-90). If you are looking to save a few bucks on your Anchorage airport stay you’ll do fine at one of the cheaper options.

Honorable Mention Best Hotel:

Millennium Alaskan Hotel Anchorage

Though almost next door to the Courtyard, the Millennium has a slightly better location on Lake Spenard. We had a very nice stay here. However, reports from other guests suggest that the service is somewhat spotty. The Airport Hotel Guru gives it the honorable mention in part because it feels more Alaskan and more lodgey (yes, that’s now a word). Choose the Millennium over the Courtyard if you want a break from the big chains.

Closest Accommodations to the Anchorage Airport:

Right Touch Massage & Rest Center
OK, technically this isn’t a hotel. But this quirky spa located in the airport offers room for $10/hour with every fourth hour free. There are LOTS of catches. Most significantly, the Right Touch is located inside security in the South Terminal so if you are flying out of the North Terminal – or simply want to have your check-in luggage with you – you are out of luck. They admitted to us that they don’t check their email often (“We aren’t that technically advanced”) so call to make reservations: 907-243-3443.

Many of the “real” hotels are around 2 miles / 3 kilometers from the airport. Technically the closest of these is the Coast International Inn. It has a overly smokey restaurant but free wi-fi and slightly-better-than-decent rooms.

Cheapest Anchorage Airport Hotel:

Spenard Hostel
A total of $21 ($22 paying with a credit card) gets you a dorm bed at this hostel that draws a surprising range of ages. There are no single rooms and no complimentary shuttle (you’ll have to take the public bus 7A to 42nd Ave.) but the Spenard does offer free wi-fi and free coffee/tea. Recommended.

The Most Luxurious Anchorage Airport Hotel:

Courtyard Anchorage Airport
See Best Overall, above.

The Best Value Anchorage Airport Hotel:

Puffin Inn
There’s not a huge quality difference between the Puffin Inn and the Courtyard (our top choice) – the rooms are maybe a half-step down and there’s no pool – but the Puffin can be as much as a $100 cheaper. Choose a room in either the “moderate” and “deluxe” sections (they are rather similar) but steer clear of the shabby “original” section.

Honarable Mention Value Hotel:

Microtel Anchorage
Quality wise the Microtel is nearly identical to the Puffin Inn – in choosing a value hotel we would stay at whichever was cheaper. Like the Puffin, the Microtel has free wi-fi. Unlike the Puffin, it has a 24-hour hot tub.

Anchorage Airport Info:

Ted Steves Anchorage International Airport
There are two terminals: North and South. The South Terminal, dominated by Alaskan Airlines, is much nicer. The North Terminal is crappy and has only one place to eat. Happily, both terminals have free wi-fi.

A few smaller Alaska-based airlines are based here including:
