Amsterdam (AMS)

Amsterdam Schiphol is one of our favorite airports for several reasons. Here’s one: From the airport’s terminal you can walk to *three* hotels. (At most airports you are lucky to have one walkable option). Schiphol is also well connected by train to Amsterdam’s city center, possibly negating the need for you to stay by the airport to begin with. See Airport Info, below, for more details.

Overall Best Amsterdam Airport Hotel:

Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel and Conference Center
Airport Hotel Guru: Sheraton Amsterdam AirportThe Sheraton is conveniently walkable from the Schipol terminal, but that’s not the only reason it wins our Best AMS Hotel designation. This is a world class property and operates like a machine — people seemingly come and go in all hours of the day, yet the hotel accommodates them all efficiently without missing a beat. The rooms are spotless, large (by European airport hotel standards), and have a pleasant Dutch modernness to them. The breakfast buffet is extensive and well serviced. The gym is gleaming and open 24 hours. Our only complaints: there’s no pool (you’ll have to make due with a sauna), there’s a charge for the wireless, and the Sheraton’s airport convenience comes at a large price premium. As always, you’ll get a good deal booking through Airport Hotel Guru. If you can afford it, a stay at the Sheraton Amsterdam Airport is highly recommended.

Honorable Mention Best Hotel:

Hilton Amsterdam Airport Schiphol
The Hilton is a good airport hotel, don’t get us wrong. If you are looking for reliable business-oriented accommodations within walking distance of the terminal you will be happy staying here. Being the second best airport hotel in as competitive a market as Amsterdam is still very good. The Hilton falls into the Honorable Mention spot because, compared to the Sheraton, it is a bit more tired and a bit more stale. Somehow the smaller things sometimes tend not to work here (one of the elevators breaking down, for example). And, anyway, we can’t find a significant advantage that the Hilton has over the Sheraton except that the Hilton is typically cheaper. The Airport Hotel Guru, not traveling on an expense account, is willing to pay a €30 to €40 premium to stay at the Sheraton. Our advice: check the price on both and decide from there.

Closest Accommodations to the Amsterdam Airport:

The Sheraton and Hilton (see reviews above) are both connected to Schiphol Airport via a covered walkway. The Sheraton is a slightly closer walk than is the Hilton, yet another hotel is even closer, being inside the airport:

Mercure Schiphol Terminal
The Mercure is one of those airport hotels exclusively for getting some sleep before your morning flight. It is located behind security inside the main terminal, which, in practical terms, means it is only an option for people with a long Amsterdam layover. (Because, if you are starting your journey in Amsterdam and catching an early morning flight you are unlikely to be able to check your bags and get a boarding pass the night before). Further, the Mercure’s cost structure has to work for your circumstance: you can rent a room from 8pm to 9am for €80, or get a day use from 10am to 7pm for €70. (But stay from 4pm to 11am will set you back €220!) And as if those hurdles are not enough, the Mercure’s 33 rooms are often full. Should you get a room you’ll find it to be dark and small, with a small television, a small bathroom, a small desk and not particularly comfortable bed and not much else. The Mercure itself has no restaurant, so you are at the mercy of the in-terminal options. All that said, for layover passengers the Mercure offers the convenience of the Sheraton or Hilton (see above) at a fraction of the price.

Cheapest Amsterdam Airport Hotel:

We don’t know of any especially cheap options that meets our criteria for an airport hotel. If your priority is finding a bed at a rock bottom price you are best off staying by central station and making use of the airport train (see below).

The Most Luxurious Amsterdam Airport Hotel:

Radisson SAS Hotel Amsterdam Airport
Airport Hotel Guru: Radisson SAS Amsterdam AirportThe Radisson is an excellent airport hotel. The suites are truly luxurious — more so than those at the Sheraton. The Radisson has an even better gym than the Sheraton, too, and offers free wireless internet. We like that the hotel has a bit more personality than the typical business hotel — the lobby has this little art-deco thing happening and the rooms come in three themes: Oriental, Scandinavian and Maritime. (The Airport Hotel Guru is partial to the Oriental). In what’s becoming a mini-trend among top-end hotels, the Radisson offers a “Ladies’ Suite,” which seems to be a lot like the men’s suite but with pink towels and different magazines and toiletries. The Radisson, in fact, would have made our Best Value selection if it weren’t that little bit overpriced, especially compared to the Dorint (below). The hotel’s complimentary airport shuttles run every 15 minutes during peak hours, and every 30 minutes during other times from 6am to 11:45pm. Check for current rates and consider the Radisson as an alternative to the Hilton and Sheraton.

The Best Value Amsterdam Airport Hotel:

Dorint Conference-Hotel Amsterdam Airport
The Dorint is an excellent business-centric airport hotel, similar in quality to the Hilton (see above) for around €100 less. The rooms at this four star property are modern, featuring Scandinavian furniture and very comfortable beds. There are lots of perks here: a heated indoor pool (and poolside bar!), a sauna, a running track, complimentary wireless internet, free bicycle rental (which is good for getting out around Amsterdam as there’s not much in the immediate vicinity of the hotel). We like the hotel’s billiards table equipped sports bar and outdoor bistro. The hotel’s free shuttle makes the airport run every 15 minutes during peak hours, ever 30 minutes otherwise. A great value for Amsterdam.

Honorable Mention Best Value Hotel:

Dutch Design Hotel Artemis
artams Amsterdam (AMS)The Airport Hotel Guru appreciates properties that flash personality, and the Hotel Artemis does more than flash (at least in the public areas). This is a funkily designed pad, juxtaposing curves and right angles, flashes of color surrounded by extensive white. Dutch themes — clogs, cows, windmills — are woven in this design tapestry. It is enough to keep a reviewer from mentioning that the Artemis offers rooms of a quality similar to your standard business hotel — a good deal for the typical rate of around €100. The big drawback is the location: far from the Amsterdam city center (or anything of interest). There’s also no free airport shuttle. Both of those issues have public transportation solutions — bus #12 gets you from the hotel to the airport, and tram #2 runs directly from the Artemis to the city center.

Amsterdam Airport Info:

Schiphol Airport
Spacious modern trains make frequent trips between a platform directly under the Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam’s Centraal Station. During the day trains run every 15 minutes, though between 1am and 6am there’s only one per hour. Since the journey time is only 15 minutes, an excellent alternative to the typical airport hotel is to stay near the Centraal Station. (The train fare is €3.80; from Amsterdam CS there are also shared taxis for €21 and private ones for €43). There are several excellent hotel options, in all the price categories, within a few minutes walk of the station. Our favorites:

Top End (over €150):

Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam – The closest hotel to the station, well run with a classic looks and lots of amenities. Recommended.

Renaissance Amsterdam Hotel – The most luxurious hotel within a five minute walk of the station. We like their Turkish-style baths.

Mid-range (€50 to €150):

Hotel Neutraal – Across the road from Centraal Station and a 5~7 minute closer walk to station than the other hotels we list in this price range. However “neutral” is a good name for this bland, uninspiring property.

Hotel Sint Nicolaas – The modern rooms, free breakfast and wireless internet, and central location make the Sint Nicolaas an excellent value.

Hotel Terminus – A typical mid-range European hotel catering mostly to business travelers. Wireless internet.

Budget (under €50):

Meeting Point Youth Hostel – Closest budget option to the station but only has dorm beds.

The Flying Pig Downtown – A regular haunt of the Airport Hotel Guru in much younger days. It is full of character, definitely youth oriented, but has singles for €37.

The Crown Hotel – The most expensive in this price category (basic singles are €40 but prices rise quickly from there) but also by far the nicest and most hotel-like. Recommended.

Ahh if only one of these were closer to the city. We’re going over for Queen’s Day this year and initially booked into a really nice house boat. Unfortunately, there was such confusion over the booking that we now have to find somehwhere else :(

Actually, the Airport is just a 10-minute train ride from the city center, so you can easily stay at one of these hotels. A hotel would be better then a house boat anyway, since they are operated on a more professional basis.

I think I will choose Hotel Terminus , an acceptable price and we heard that it’s ok.

Schiphol is one of my favourite airports too but that’s probably because I live in Amsterdam! ;-) I noticed that you missed the latest hotel addition to Schiphol: Citizen M, an amazing design hotel. Very cool, very trendy! And affordable. Here’s a link to their site:

Just what I was looking for. I’ve got a short layover in Amsterdam next month and really needed a hotel within walking distance (and extreme rarity). I’ve pretty much decided on the Sheraton, thanks for the info.

Good range of options for us to consider when we go back next year thanks. We did try the Crown Hotel and found it pretty comfortable given the amount of money we saved. It’s a good base to set out and explore from.
